The archaic "wherefore" is synonymous with "why", and it can be confusing, but one thing that can help is remembering that we still have its counterpart in usage: "therefore".

Where (is the reason) for ____?"
There (is the reason) for ____."

(Historically, "for" could be used to mean "because")
